There are certain requirements for moguldom—teen or otherwise—and Selena Gomez, with the launch of her signature scent this month, will have satisfied them all. Fashion line, check; music-movie television success, check; having a boyfriend with similarly hyphenated talents whom one sweetly demurs from speaking about, check. Another requirement? A hyper-opinionated community of superfans. And on a blustery February afternoon during fashion week, a dozen of Selena’s are gathered in a New York City skyscraper to meet the starlet—and help her create a new perfume.

“I have three favorite smells in the world: raspberry, vanilla, and freesia,” says Selena, while sniffing testers of each fragrance note. “Vanilla just makes me feel cozy and yummy. Raspberry is fun without being too sweet. I love how feminine freesia is. It was important to me that anyone who smelled it found it enticing. I wanted it to be absolutely kissable.” Whom might you be kissing, Selena? The starlet says with a coy laugh, “Well, it’s not like I’m kissing myself.”

Selena began brainstorming her scent more than a year ago and, over the course of six months, whittled down her options from 70-odd combinations of freesia, vanilla, and raspberry to just three finalists. Assessing each one Goldilocks-style, she says to her fans: “This first one is fruity—almost overwhelmingly so. And this second one smells like detergent. It smells clean and nice. But is it special enough?” She nixes the first option and sets aside the second as a possibility. The third option is given an extended, lingering inhalation: “Clean, like the second option, but with a touch of fruit—it’s flirty and delicious. I love this.” Her fans concur (“I want to eat it,” says one. “Can I take it home now?” asks another). “Oh, good. But most importantly,” Selena says with a wink, “does it make you feel kissable?”

Tween horoscopes are unique because it uses the planets to give insight into a specific age group, dealing only with what is most important to these particular individuals.

The concept of a tweenager is a very modern one. Up until the later part of the 20th Century, boys and girls went right from childhood into adulthood with a puberty ritual and no middle ground. The teenager concept was invented to give the children of so-called ‘more advanced’ societies a grace period to develop between child- and adulthood instead of a one-day transformation with a ritual.

Tween horoscopes give insight into these very specific issues, since the areas detailed are of the most concern to this age group. Tween horoscopes are a fun and effective way to gain this insight.

Question: Skin Care Tips for Tweens – How to Wash Your FaceMy daughter is 10 years old. I’m finding the early signs of acne on her face, and I’m so concerned that it’s going to start early. She only uses water to wash her face, and to be honest, I’m not sure how well she washes it. I don’t want to get her skin care products that will be too harsh for her age, but I also want to get her on a good first step. What do you recommend?

Answer:I was just having basically the same question with my friend, except she was talking about her 10 year old son. The thing to remember about this age, is that they are responsible for bathing themselves, so you don’t really what is all involved with cleansing habits. But I have some great tips and product recommendations that will make it easy on you and your tween.

First, your tween doesn’t need an acne line, their skin is simply too sensitive. Instead, talk to your tween about their skin care habits. Are they only using water? Are they using a bar soap? Are they possibly using your facial cleanser? The last two options can cause havoc with sensitive skin, so once you know what they are doing, you can give advice on what the better option would be.

Tweens shouldn’t be using anything other than a gentle cleanser on their skin. Two good options you can find at the drugstore are Cetephyl Gentle Skin Cleanser (compare prices) and Dove Sensitive Skin Cleansing Cloths (compare prices). Cetyphil is a cream cleanser that comes out in a pump. One pump should be enough for their entire face. Dove’s cleansing cloths come set with cleanser already in them. Simply run under water and rub them together to create the lather. (Cut them in half to save money!)

Your tween should realistically need to only wash once a day, unless they have been active in after-school sport
Make sure your tween doesn’t use their body lotion on their face. These often contain ingredients which can cause the gentle face to react. And rarely do tweens need to worry about facial moisturizer at all. If you find their skin is extra dry, again, Cetyphil Facial Moisturizer is very gentle.(compare prices).s or other activities where they have become sweaty or visibly dirty.

Skin care at this age is really about cleaning the dirt off the top layer of skin. There is no need to go further with extra steps at least for a few more years, and only if acne is a major concern. But by teaching them some basic steps and give them responsibility by purchasing skin care items just for them, the habit will start early. (And eventually they’ll thank you for that!)

That very evening I started putting together my plan for the ultimate boys, girls, and kids – tweens’ fashion destination for our little village. And eventually came up with JC’s Closet.

I was at the South Mountain Elementary Spring Fair earlier this year- it was a nice warm day and I was sweating from the brisk walk from the train station. I was rushing to keep a promise made to my boys after running that morning to catch the Midtown Direct 7:34 am and forgetting to leave spending money. Anyway, I digress – back to the boys.

It should be easy to find them – they have on those cool skull and cross bones polo shirts… there he is – oh no, that’s not Jonathan…Oh, there’s Carter… nope, not him. In the span of 30 seconds- 15 boys! Literally – 15 boys! I counted 15 boys ranging from 5 to 12 years old run past me with skull and cross bone printed polo shirts. I thought that those tops were so cool and unique – I guess there were a lot of moms who had the same thought. They were cool, but NOT at all UNIQUE!

It was at this moment that the entrepreneurial voice in my head said – ‘you have to do something about this! Just because we’ve moved from the City doesn’t mean we have to look like we all shop in the same store at the mall. We live in a suburb of New York City, for God’s sake – not Fish Creek, Wisconsin! ‘ My apologies to Wisconsin, its fine country.

That very evening I started putting together my plan for the ultimate boys, girls, and kids – tweens’ fashion destination for our little village. And eventually came up with JC’s Closet.

JC’s Closet opened in September 2011 and was recently honored as a Runner Up in New Jersey Monthly’s annual “Best of NJ” Kid’s Store category.
